Excela Health PHARMACY INTERN - TEMPORARY in Latrobe, Pennsylvania


Job Summary:

The Student, under the Pharmacist's supervision and according to established policies and procedures, assists with the medication distribution system.


Essential Functions: Defined as duties specific to the job, that, if removed, would change the entire purpose of the job; to include the Essential Physical Demands and Essential Working Conditions of this position.

  • Core Essential Functions:

  • Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance.

  • Fill medication orders and prepare for Pharmacist's review

  • Fill new medication orders

  • Fill medication cassettes

  • Assist in reconciliation of missing orders and doses

  • Complete required documentation

  • Deliver and retrieve medications to and from patient care areas

  • Deliver medications to appropriate storage area on the nursing unit; including patients rooms

  • Retrieve discontinued and discharged patient's medication from nursing unit and return to Rx

  • Deliver stock medications and place in appropriate storage location

  • Maintain patient transfers, discharges, and medication returns to their proper locations

  • Daily cassette exchange – distribution of med (5am)

  • Complete all assigned charging and crediting functions

  • Charges and credits from miscellaneous sources

  • Prepackaging medications in preparation for pharmacist's review

  • Prepackage oral liquids

  • Simple batch compounding

  • Complete required documentation

  • Utilize existing technologies (where applicable by position)

  • Fill automated dispensing cabinets (Acudose machines)

  • Utilize Pharmacy operating system (Cerner)

  • Utilize Pharmacy Robot

  • Maintain basic department inventory functions

  • Stock medications to their appropriate locations

  • Rotate stock as necessary and check outdates

  • Assist in maintaining adequate stock levels

  • Maintain medication stock areas

  • Fill emergency trays and boxes

  • Maintain monthly outdates of assigned section

  • Facilitates communication within the Pharmacy

  • Answer telephone and triage calls to appropriate person

  • Monitor Pharmacy Window and assist customers according to their need

  • Specialty Essential Functions:


  • Marginal Functions: Defined as duties that are not essential in nature and do not take a considerable amount of time to complete (less than 10%).

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Required Skills and Knowledge: Minimum level of education, skills and abilities necessary in performing the job.


  • Enrolled in an accredited college majoring in Pharmacy, Science, or related field OR in a school of Pharmacy.

Certification / Licensure / Regulation:

  • Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic Math and Keyboard Proficiency

  • Functional Skills on PC and Related Software (Microsoft Office)

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Sound judgment, problem solving skills, strong oral and written communication skills, ability to follow directions from other team members; works independently assigned duties.

  • Ability to communicate with all members of the health care team

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments

  • Desire to become a hospital pharmacist. Desire to be knowledgeable of hospital Rx systems (Cerner, Robot, Acudoses).
