The Pharmacy Technician Apprentice is trained to provide pharmacy services, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. These functions include, but are not limited to distributing pharmaceuticals, performing inventory control, assisting the pharmacist with narcotic reconciliation and discrepancy resolution, financial transactions, providing customer service and maintaining pharmacy records. The apprenticeship is designed to provide experiential training, to utilize and extend the technician apprentices knowledge and competency while performing technical pharmacy functions in the Inpatient Pharmacy and Ambulatory Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Pharmacy Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
Prepares medication orders under the oversight of a registered pharmacist.
Assists the pharmacist in the maintenance of adequate drug supplies in filling areas and gives notification regarding the need to reorder supplies.
Assured that the filling areas are maintained in a neat and orderly manner.
Refers request for drug information to a registered pharmacist
Assists the pharmacist in maintaining the security of drug supplies.
Provides appropriate documentation wherever and whenever required.
Performs tasks associated with automatic equipment and maintains appropriate records as designated.
Major responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician Apprentice will vary depending upon which pharmacy role he/she is assigned. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Essential Specific job functions: (Inpatient Pharmacy)
Prepares designated IV additive preparations using appropriate aseptic technique under the supervision of registered pharmacist.
Prepares medication trays.
Delivers or tubes (pneumatic tube system) medication to patient care areas in accordance with departmental policies.
Delivers medications carts to patient care areas.
Essential Specific job functions: (Ambulatory Pharmacy)
During each work shift, all ambulatory pharmacy technician apprentices must follow workload procedures directed by the pharmacist on duty.
Pharmacy technician apprentices assure accuracy and completeness of workflow processes. Ensures all entered orders are verified in a timely manner by the licensed pharmacist.
Pharmacy Technician Apprentice ensures all guests/patients receive safe care. Maintain a safety first work ethic. Report any medication errors or mediation variances by policy.
Assist in managing pharmacy inventory levels including ordering, stocking, repackaging, removing outdated or short-dated inventory and return of medications for credit or destruction as required.
The pharmacy technician apprentice will answer the telephone in a timely manner and refer all calls as necessary. The ambulatory technician apprentice is the primary pharmacy representative for telephone contacts unless precluded by NJ statutes limiting the authority of the registered Pharmacy technician ( ie. cannot accept new prescription orders.
Ensure timely processing of prescription orders where renewal authorization is needed by initiating contact and follow-up with prescribing physicians as required including processing of prescriptions requiring prior authorization or other third party-related issues.
Maintain refrigerator logs and any and all other logs/reports including end-of-month processing required by the pharmacist in charge.
Maintaining the cleanliness of the pharmacy work area including work surfaces, dispensing machines, counting machines and all pharmaceutical grade manufacturing equipment.
Assuring sufficient quantities of supplies needed in the dispensing process are available including vials, bottles, labels, paper, toners, prescription pads.
Ensure that completed prescriptions and any necessary documentation are filed according to established protocols.
Pickup of prescriptions and delivery of completed prescription orders to patient care areas
Assist with Controlled Substance Audits and inventories as allowed.
Attend quality performance assignments.
Assist ambulatory pharmacy department initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
High school diploma or equivalent
Completion of an Accredited Pharmacy Technician Program.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
Valid New Jersey Pharmacy Registration or 180 day waiver, once registration application filed.
Pharmacy Technician Apprentice Plans to take the PTCB certification exam or in possession of a valid Certification from PTCB or equivalent.
