Job Description Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center Department: Infusion / Oncology Position is located: Lafayette Building Work Type: Full Time FTE: 1.000000 (40 hours a week) Work Schedule: Hours are Monday-Friday, 6am-530pm Sign on bonus: This position is eligible for a $500 sign on bonus. Current employees of any Northern Light Member Organizations or those with a service break less than one year are not eligible. Summary: POSITION SUMMARY: Assist pharmacists in medication preparation and distribution while ensuring a high degree of quality and accuracy during daily tasks. Pharmacy Technicians communicate with co-workers and other staff members of EMMC including RNs, CNAs, PharmDs, etc. to ensure correct and timely distribution to patients. Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for refilling Talyst and Pyxis machines, preparing medications for distribution and delivering medications to patient care areas. Pharmacy Technicians are expected to attend employee updates, staff meetings, and be up to date on hospital policies and procedures. Additional duties and responsibilities may include participating in training of employee and quality assurance checks. Responsibilities: PEOPLE Performs self-evaluation at merit review Assists in orientation/training of students, technicians and pharmacists Maintains good working relationships with co-workers Monitors progress on orientation check list Communicates to oncoming staff at change of shift Maintains training/ competency of all new/old equipment SERVICE Able to prioritize workload and establish a daily work load pattern Delivers medications to patient care areas Narcotics delivered in a prompt and courteous manner Maintains proper floor stock and Pyxis par levels in patient care areas and pharmacy Participates in non-Pyxis fill Prepares medications for initial/emergent dispensing to patient care areas Floor stock requisitions filled properly for ancillary departments Performs duties as assigned Able to generate Cerner, Talyst and Pyxis dispense/fill lists, produce and utilize labels, reports and print screens Assists in receiving and storage of inventory Able to retrieve medication information Able to produce and utilize labels, Cerner, Talyst and Pyxis reports and print screens Able to “trouble-shoot” Pyxis problems and request a Pyxis FST if needed QUALITY Willing to assist in managing emergent shortfalls of staff Flexible to change in schedule Assists in problem evaluation and solution implementation Performs outdate inspections monthly Maintains all work areas in a neat and orderly condition Performs assigned floor inspections and cycle counts monthly Maintains pharmacy equipment (hoods, refrigerators, PC, etc.) Tubes medications appropriately with proper packaging to patient care areas Ensures accountability of narcotic, investigational medication Accurate distribution to Pyxis Uses barcode system as per procedure (ie Talyst, Pyxis) Unit doses liquid and solid dosage forms appropriately Participates in projects as assigned Able to produce label documentation that is consistent with ASHP and ISMP standards Appropriate compounding worksheet preparation and documentation Follows appropriate hand hygiene and garbing procedures in IV room Follows appropriate daily and monthly cleaning procedures of the IV room Knowledgeable and appropriately compounds sterile preparations Low and Medium Risk sterile preparations Chemotherapy sterile preparations (chemo certified technicians only) Completed and Passed Semi-Annual Sterile Compounding competency Applies appropriate aseptic technique to all sterile preparations FINANCE Monitors product wastage Uses Want Book, communicates with buyer when needed Rotates stock Monitors inventory utilization for Pyxis and specialty units and establishes stock par levels Maintains par levels of pre-mix IVPB Appropriate billing/crediting procedure utilizing barcode driven processes Maintains knowledge of manual billing procedures Consistently investigates missing dose requests Transfers medications in a timely manner GROWTH Monitors product usage trends and communicates to buyer or supervisor Obtains and maintains PTCB Pharmacy Technician certification within fifteen months of hire Maintains knowledge base by participating in at least 6 pharmacy staff in-services annually Competencies and skills: Essential: * Achieves Results: Sets high standards for their own outcomes and seizes opportunities to engage others towards objectives.
